Moving to Macau
I am going to be moving to Macau from the U.S. (Colorado) in August. I have read much of what has been posted and found it to be very helpful.
I am wondering if any of you have additional advice that I might find useful. I feel excited but overwhelmed at the same time. Thank you in advance for your help.

If you ask a specific question, it would be helpful in giving an answer.
Here's a shot in the dark:
Buses. They are cheap and convenient and a great way to tour Macau. Make sure that you bring a coin bag that will hold about 20 - 30 coins easily, as each ride will take an average of 5 coins. The fares vary, depending on where you are in the route. I've seen the fares change mid route.
Also, make sure you bring a map onto the bus. The routes are posted at each stop but only the names of the stops are listed and not a route map. In fact, I have never seen a route map anywhere, not even on the bus company's website. It can be pretty confusing. What I did was to ride the bus and trace where we rode onto the map. With repetition, it gets easier.

Hi DrD,
I am from USA too - Virginia. Have relatives here working for Lisboa HR and Marketing Macau international airport. Been visiting Macau before it became a tourist destination.
Transportation/Language
If you dont understand cantonese, you're in bad shape. English translations are on two parallel tracks. Foreigner naturally expects that if you tell the taxi driver you want to go to the "VENETIAN?", the most outstanding landmark in Macau, he'll understand at least the english word "VENETIAN?" right?/ Well, you'll be in for a surprise ! The locals have cantonese translated names for everything that does not match in english, not even close. For example, Taipa (Cotai Strip Island), is called Tum Chai and Best Western is call "Guat Lan". If possible get someone to write in chinese where to want to go. I speak cantonese and I am tearing my hair out ! Oh, and by the way, a 45 minutes commute anywhere by American standard is normal but to the macanese, it's very very far.
Destination Macau - if you fly in HK, you can go the Ferry Service Desk. They provide the service of transporting your luggage from HK to Macau. There is no need to pick up your luggage upon arrival in HK. Just go straight to the Ferry Service Desk. You can have pickup your luggage upon arrival in Macau Ferry Terminal after immigration. Cost HK$180. which includes bus transporation to HK Ferry Terminal.
Accommodations : Macau is considered the urban city. Taipa is the suburb. Less than 20 mins drive to cross the bridge between the two island. Taipa is more modern and newer neighbour. If you need to find a place to live, let me know. email address : wtsportlinks@gmail.com.
I found a great local friend who know every nooks and cranies, history, places to eat, places to party and where local shops.
As someone previous suggested, would be more helpful if you have specific questions and would be happy to share experiences. Welcome to Macau !!
