Good coffee places? and please don't say Starbucks!!!
Hi,
Can anyone recommend any good Italian style espresso/coffee places? I know of Caravella on Macau side. Any others? Any on Taipa side? I have tried the coffee from Le Caesar - it's only okay since they use those individual coffee sachets.
Your recommendations will be greatly appreciated!

My experience is that Portuguese restaurants serve good expresso. You have a bunch of those in Taipa: Santos, O Manel, A Petisqueira... In Macau, try Ruby Cafe in the Fisherman's Wharf or la Trattoria de Isabella close to Kun Iam statue in NAPE area. Don't remember if Cafe y Nata, next door to Caravela, has good coffee. But the egg tarts are not bad :)
After all, I'm not a great coffee connoisseur. I basically drink it at home, from my Nespresso machine.
Cheers

Believe it or not, you can get excellent Illy coffee at the Haagen Daz in Taipa.
Why are people hostile to Starbucks? The coffee there is very good.
Hi CC,
It's a question of taste, and apparently Starbucks is not the style of BoyfFomOz. A lot of European countries prefer strong expresso coffee to soft "American coffee". In other countries, the opposite. We're lucky in Macau being able to choose.

I would say Macau is the best place for coffee in Asia. Vietnam is also very good. it's very easy to get a strong coffee and low price to pay. Hong Kong have no less coffee shops, but most of the time you can't smoke there.
My favourite is Café Ou Mun:

But I am not against Starbucks now and again, especially because they have a couple of tables outside where you can watch people go by :)

If you want to taste the "next best thing" to the real expresso, I guess Café Ou Mun is the place you should go...
Hi fellas,
I didn't mention the Ou Mun as it will be closing its door for good very soon. Otherwise, yes, as a Portuguese café, it has good coffee.

Thanks to all for your recommendations.
CC - I have nothing against Starbucks - far from being hostile. As DrPoi pointed out, their style of espresso coffee is not suited to my tastes. I do go there for American style drip filter coffee if that is what I feel like - after all, that is what Americans are good at.
And yes - the egg tarts at Cafe y Nata are out of this world fantastic!!
Ok. You guys are right. There are likely better European style coffee shops here that I have yet to try. But I give great credit to Starbucks for improving coffee in North America. Those of you from Europe likely have never had anything as bad as the industrial coffee that used to be consumed in offices all over North America. It would just sit all day in a metal or glass pot. Terrible! Miami being the exception.
I appreciate the above suggestions and will try them.
Hi everyone, i understand how coffee can be a very personal thing; my coffee tastebuds developed greatly since we moved to Melbourne, Australia where we are spoiled with choice. I haven't tried all the recommended coffee places here, but recently i had the best coffee i've had for ages in Bookachino, nice and strong without the bitterness. It was slightly too hot but didn't bother me as it gave me more time to browse through some mags etc.
Hey Merlo,
You hit it right on the money! I am moving from Melbourne Australia - hence my question!
Look forward to bumping into you all at a local coffee shop!

What happened to the great coffee places in the Travessa di D Domingos? there used to be several there that I visited straight off the ferry before doing anything else.
Sadly, they've all been forced to close down - casualties of rocketing rent cost and lack of people to employ as apparently, they all work in the hotel and casinos now.
"Be the change you want to see"
Well, one of those did close because of debts not related to rent prices or lack of manpower even if that's what they claimed...

Back to coffee...hi boy from Oz & others, hope you have found some decent coffee by now in Macau. We are relocating back to melbourne in less than 2 weeks -would have liked to stay a bit longer, but that's life. Anyway, in terms of coffee, in my opinion, the best places are Illy at the Venetian (the little coffee bar in the souvenir shop next to the food court), Mc Cafe in Taipa or San Malo and Westin is not too bad. Hope this is helpful for some newcomers....!!! take care...
Hey, guys
why nobody mentioned the Singing Bean Cafe in Senado, San Malo? It's located under Watson's. They have wide variety of cafes also and their choices of crepes is highly recommended, plus they have a smoking area as well which is a big plus for me. Enjoy, my fellow coffee lovers.
God bless,

Hi there, a new spot in Albergue - Calçada de São Lázaro, No.8, not far from Tap Seac Square, near the S. Lazaro Church - Locanda Italian Restaurant + Fashion Designer Lines Lab + Bloom Yellow Bookshop + Casa de Portugal - Creative Industries hub of Macau!
Lovely place to escape to, good coffee and magazines. Closed on Mondays.
Enjoy!
Oh, by the way, Ou Mun Cafe is coming back, in the same place! Stay tuned...
There's a new place on Taipa across from Kingsville, on the way to Taipa Village. Cuppa Coffee. It has been open for a couple of weeks. I haven't tried the coffee yet, but the pastries are delicious!
Bottoms up!
So happy to hear this Teresa... Ou Mun was my favourite coffe shop in Macau and I was disappointed when they had to close down!
Great news :) Do you know when?
