The Macau Military Club was founded and built in 1870 as a private association for culture and recreation for its members -- army officers, or civilians as guest members. It was extremely elegant and considered one of the finest examples of classical European architecture in the east. Prior to 1975 the club focused on the Portuguese community but since then it has expanded and is now open to all communities in Macau. In 1994 the club was renewed, retaining all the classical structures - the design was planned to reflect the ambience of the period.
